Return from Canuckada
April 27, 2003
Well,  I got back from Winnipeg around 430 yesterday afternoon but I didn't update because I was quite tired.  I spent the rest of the afternoon sleeping and reading a bit.  I really didnt' feel like fucking with the site at all.

As most of you know, I went up to Canada with my Canadian Polity class last Thursday.  Man, it was a fucking trip... I think I spent more on booze this weekend than I have in my entire life.  I guess I'll start at the beginning.  We left around 7am Thursday morning in school vans, and arrived at the Hotel (fancy ass place) around 1230 or so.  We didn't have much time before we had to be at the legislature, so all we did was check in and throw our stuff into the rooms.  Then it was back into the van, which we had just spent 5 hours in.

The legislature was actually pretty cool; the building was of a Roman design and had some sweet ass features.  I took a lot of pictures, but most of them didn't come out very well.  We also got to sit in on a 45 minute period of question time... I must say it's very different than watching a session in the American congress.  These guys were yelling at each other and throwing insults; it was actually funny as hell to watch.  After that we finished touring the building and headed back to the hotel.  We had a bit of free time to shop at a mall down the street... I bought a book ( Magic the Gathering : Invasion) at a huge ass bookstore called Chapters.  Things are expensive as hell in Canada... a paperback book cost me 12 bucks after tax, and a cup of mochaccino was $4.75 (in Canadian of course, but that's still expensive).  After that I headed down to a liquor store and picked up a pack of beer.  Man, it was shitty ass beer too... I only wound up drinking 2 bottles out of 6, I left the rest in the fridge.  Whoever checks in next will have a suprise... I left quite a bit of booze in there because you can't keep it.

After that we headed out to eat at a Vietnamese restaraunt, the food wasn't all that great and it was expensive but the conversation was classic.  I tried another beer there, but alas, it sucked horribly too.  We then went out to an English pub for an hour or so after a bit of a tour through the city.... I wound up drinking entirely too much sweet cider.  I can't really recall what happened after the pub, I think we just went back to the hotel though.

I arose with quite a headache on Friday, but some extra strength Tylenol got that under control, along with some water.  Man, they have some funny shit up there... the pop/water/beer, etc is all in metric units so some of the sizes are quite odd.  They are also required by law to have everything in English and French both, so you see a lot of French all over the place, including on food and drinks.  They also have some peculiar items, such as Reese's cups in 3 and 5 packs, and odd flavored potato chips such as mayonnaise (salad dressing), and ketchup.  Anyway, on friday we went to the museum, which had some cool stuff.  It also had a very surly Frenchman as one of the curator types... he was just like the Frenchman in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," no joke.  I had to really try hard to contain my laughter.  After the museum we went to a rather unique mall called The Forks.   It was setup like streets with tunnels between them and it had a glass ceiling; there were also walkways between all the stores on the 2nd floor.  It also had an observation deck 6 floors up; I took a few pictures off of it, and nearly forgot my camera there too.  I picked up an original vinyl (records) copy of Pink Floyd: The Wall at one of the shops.  That night we ate at an Indian restaraunt and then returned to the hotel sports bar.  I had 7 margaritas and a Corona that night... the margaritas rocked, the Corona was horrible.  We watched the Wild game and played some pool  too...

Got up around 8 on Saturday and checked out, then made a coupel last stops for gas and food before heading back.  We got back here around 415, and then I walked back to my room.  Spent hte next few hours sleeping; then I layed in bed and read the book I acquired at Chapters on Thursday... it was quite excellent.  I wouldn't mind going back.

I spent a good portion of today sleeping, then I got up and ate lunch before entering a Magic tournament.  I got my shit kicked bad because my deck wasn't complete, but I did make some good trades.  Still got one booster out of the deal, which wasn't bad considering it was only 5 bucks to enter.  I really need to bring a good deck or two up here...

Well, that's happened since last Thursday... pictures are below.
