| Well, after missing Magic tournaments two weeks in a row for deer season I finally got back into it with this week's Type-I. I once again broke out my trusty Discard deck (for the lack of another to play). I didn't do badly, but I wasn't really pleased either; highlight of the day was the purchase of my 1st Power 9 Card, a Beta Time Walk. 1st Round Played against Matt, who was running a mono red fire deck. I had problems dealing with his creatures the first game; he totally wasted me. The second game I couldn't get a land to save my life, so he easily beat me down with his Seal of Fire, Incinerate, Lightning Bolts, and other assorted crap. I lost quite badly in 2.... Rounds (0-1) / Record (0-2) 2nd Round Played Jim, who was also running mono red fire (exactly half of the players were using fire today). We both ran into mana clumping problems, but he wound up with the fire, and I couldn't draw into enough discards to keep him at bay. I did manage to pull out one game, but it was sheer luck... lost in 3. Rounds (0-2) / Record (1-4) 3rd Round I played against Tony in this round; he was running a green based Call of the Wild deck. It was extremly slow though, and I had no problems keeping his hand empty until I could draw into my pain mechanics. I also had the removal needed to nullify his fatties when he finally did get them out. I took this one with 2 perfect games... Rounds (1-2) / Record (3-4) 4th Round Played against Ross, who was running a newer style mono black discard. I was able to get out my mechanics early though, and wound up killing him with creature damage (whcih doesn't happen often). He also had some drain spells, which I had problems dealing with... I'm lucky he didn't pull more of them up. The games were both very close, but I took this round in 2. Final Rounds (2-2) / Record (5-4) Fire was nullifying itself today, so my mediocre 5-4 was good enough to tie me for 4th place today... had it been a larger turnout with more diversity I might not have fared as well. Oh well, I got the Time Walk anyway. End of analysis. |
